Last of the season's zoo concerts
We loaded up and went to the last of this year's Wednesday night zoo concerts. It was a hot day but we were able to get a spot under a tree. Bonus. Here are Kennedy and Zoe relaxing for a minute. They didn't stay sitting for long!
Joe gave them a ride around our little area.
We made it to the sand box for a little while before the concert began. Cassious, Kennedy and Zoe came up with this slide game. They took turns sliding into sand piled up on the slide. I think they could have gone on with this game for hours.
Did I mention how hot it was? Our Texas family members would laugh at us for not being able to tolerate temperatures in the 90s. It was good to have snow cones available. Kennedy ate one early on but can be seen here eating Joe's snow cone. I think she ate three quarters of it. Cassious is also seen here.

Dress Week
Kennedy sported a few new dresses this week. This special dress came from her friend Zoe who lives across the street. Here's Kennedy practicing her smile for the camera.
Susan picked up this Shirley Temple style dress from a local resale shop.

Turtles and Fire Trucks
We went to see our friend the toy turtle again at Laughing Planet. This time Kennedy picked up a snake too.
While we were inside some firemen came in to eat. We saw their truck, #9, outside when we left. Kennedy has been learning about firetrucks in pre-school. Last week for show and tell she took in one of her books with pictures of firetrucks.

Art
I started this chalk project off with a push cart (red, on the left) and Kennedy worked on it for a few days changing its color from red to blue, adding a plume of sorts and some road that looks like railroad tracks.
One of my favorite recent art pieces is this rainbow made with markers. In school Kennedy learned a song about the colors of the rainbow (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet) and put it to use in this drawing.

Spiderman
On Saturday evening, CK came for a visit and brought with him the coolest present for Kennedy. Measuring nearly a large as Kennedy, she finds a lot to relate to with him. Spiderman has accompanied Kennedy everywhere since arriving including to the table for art, playing games with her, and even the potty.

A Sunday Trip to the Park
Yesterday we took advantage of the afternoon sun to hang out at the park. Kennedy enjoyed swinging first. For her first two years she didn't enjoy the swing too much - that's obviously not the case any longer!
Joining us at the park was our cat, Elle. Since becoming more of an outdoor cat, Elle has taken to following us during our neighborhood jaunts. More than once we've had to chase her back for fear of her following us too far. After a while, Sheryl and Kennedy played an old familiar game of 'catch the dangling object' (be it a ball, keys - whatever is handy...)! Here's Kennedy begging Sheryl to be pushed higher.

Cool Weather continues
It's another Fall-like day in Portland, cloudy and in the mid-60s. I don't mind the cooler weather, though. More than anything, I mind that it feels more and more like summer is zipping past.
The week has been busy for all of us, hence the lack of posts. It's nice to have the weekend to relax a bit. Kennedy and Susan went off to the grocery store this morning and I snapped this picture before they left. Kennedy's glasses are so fun.

Current Book Favorites
Thomas the Train books and old tivo'd episodes have returned to favor with Kennedy in the past few weeks. She also shown a preference for Amelia Bedilia books. She picked up her first one at the local grocery store. They're quite silly.

Aunt Shelly and Kennedy
When David and Gayle were in Oregon they commented a lot on the big
ginormous trees. It was much the same for Aunt Shelly.
Kennedy and Aunt Shelly had a lot of fun together. Kennedy kept saying "You share my name" to Shelly and singing
Kennedy Shelly Sanford Anderson to the tune of John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Closing Camp
Kennedy is such a good help with tent and tarp folding. Here she is helping Susan break down the tent at our campsite.

Butte Mountain continued
We found a place to sit and eat at the top of the Mountain. Here are Kennedy and Cassious taking a small break.
Both Kennedy and Cassious loved eating peaches after the long hike up.
Heidi and Cassious at top - Mt. Hood in the background.
We stopped at the gullies and switchbacks and took turns playing Troll. Here's Cassious in his turn thinking of a question to ask us.

Butte Mountain
We decided to hike up Butte Mountain. The views on the way up aren't as nice as Huckleberry Mountain but when you get to the top there's a spectacular view of Mt. Hood's peak in front of you. You can also see Mt. Adams. Sheryl carried Kennedy in the pack a little bit but again Shelly did most of the packing.
Heidi, her son Cassious, and Lee joined us on the hike up. Here are Heidi, Cassious and Kennedy inspecting something at a stop on the trail. Cassious is only 5 years old (just) and he climbed the 2 miles up and down all by himself. What a trooper! The terrain was pretty rough again with loose rocks, tree stumps, steep dropoffs, switchbacks, etc. He was amazing. Kennedy did great too but we mostly kept her in the pack.

Huckleberry Mountain
We did a good bit of hking in the Mt. Hood area. The terrain was too difficult for Kennedy to maneuver (loose dirt, rocks and roots) so we carried her in the pack. When I say "we" I really mean Aunt Shelly. Shelly carried Kennedy the entire way there and back to the campsite--about 6 hours of hiking.
Here's a photo of Shelly and Kennedy at the top where Huckleberry trail meets the Pacific Crest trail (sign in background). Kennedy was tired, as you can see. The trail up had some spectacular views of Lost Lake and the surrounding area, but there's not much to see on the Pacific Crest part of the trail plus it was very cold. We only stayed on the Pacific Crest route for 20 minutes or so before heading back out.
Susan stayed at the campsite and started reading the newest Harry Potter book. She had a good deal of it read by the time we got back. It was nice for us to come back to the warm fire that she kept up.

Lost Lake Resort
We packed up the gear and went to Lost Lake this past weekend. The coolest thing is that Shelly flew in and joined us on the trip. It was very cold on Mt. Hood, especially on Thursday night. Here are Kennedy and Shelly in the tent.
This time, we packed in an extra tent for the toys. I don't know why we didn't think of this before; Cassious and Kennedy loved it!

Ikea
So, what happens when Ikea comes to town? We buy things that we get to put together.
We picked up a toy storage bin. Kennedy set all the pieces out in a line and walked across them as if she were walking a tightrope. I guess she thought she needed sun glasses to make it all work.

Park Fun
We went to Willamette Park last week and Kennedy couldn't get enough of the slide structure.
There was also a fun teeter totter variation.

Cupcakes
Susan and Kennedy made cupcakes for a work party. Sorry, Mema, we forgot the apron again!
Look how serious Kennedy is pouring the cupcake mix. If we tried to help her she said "Let me do it!"
After they were done and cooled down, Kennedy helped with icing and adding sprinkles.
The best part is eating the first cupcake.

Broke the Fever
Here's another photo of Kennedy at her art station.
Kennedy had a high fever earlier this week so we kept her at home. When her fever finally broke while she was sleeping she was one big sweat-ball. In the morning when we told her that her "fever broke" she said "Oh no!" thinking that something had broken.

Fun with Uncle C.K.
C.K. came by on Sunday evening and had dinner with us, pizza - his favorite meal ever. Of course it's constant fun when Uncle C.K. visits.

Little Helper
Kennedy helped put together a stool that she can use to reach the bathroom sink to wash her hands and brush her teeth.
Kennedy is very curious about how things are constructed. Sometimes we think she's on the engineer track.
Then, she moves into her creative activities, and we think she'll be an artist. She has so much fun working at her art center.
