It is our desire to have a natural, medication-and-intervention free, childbirth. In the event of complications we ask that any procedures or medications are discussed with us before they are administered.

  • Camera and Video
  • Please KNOCK before entering the room
1st Stage Labor

PLEASE, NO

  • pain medication offered to me. (I will request it if I need it.)
  • internal exams unless medically necessary
PREFERENCES
  • If I need an IV, I want to use a heparin or saline lock
  • Regional or local analgesia or anesthesia if I use drugs
  • To be free to walk around and move as I choose during labor
  • To be able to eat and drink during labor
2nd Stage Labor PLEASE, NO
  • episiotomy offered to me unless I'm having a medical emergency
  • time limits on pushing
  • forceps (If medically necessary I prefer vacuum extraction over the use of forceps)
PREFERENCES
  • Delivery positions: side-lying, squatting, hands and knees, standing upright, whatever feels right at the time
  • to view the birth using a mirror
  • to touch my baby's head as it crowns
  • to push instinctively and not be told how or when to push
  • to have the following birth equipment available to me: birthing bed, birthing chair, squatting bar, birthing pool/tub
C-Section I want my partner to be present at all times. Prefer that doula be present at all times too.
I want to be conscious.
I want to have one hand free to touch the baby.
I want to video or photograph the operation.
I want immediate contact with the baby if the baby is in good health.
Post Birth PLEASE, NO
  • pacifiers, artifical nipples or formula offered to my baby
PREFERENCES
  • to hold my baby immediately after birth
  • to wait until the umbilical cord stops pulsating before it is clamped and cut
  • to deliver the placenta unassisted
  • to postpone newborn procedures until we have had a chance to bond with our baby
  • to have my partner, Sheryl, cut the umbilical cord
  • to breastfeed my baby immediately after birth
